    2017 National Specialty
Another great ETSCA National is in the books! The Show Committee worked extremely hard to make sure that all participants and attendees had a wonderful time. The National Specialty on Thursday boasted a total entry of more than 80 with English Toy Spaniels all vying for ribbons and the beautiful items on the trophy table.
For the Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday events, the breed entries held strong with over 40 entries each day for the combined varieties. The Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner were very well attended with the treasures donated to both the silent and live Auctions being much sought after. All in, there was a recorded entry of 215 English Toy Spaniels judged over the 5 day period with attendees hailing from across the USA, Canada, and Europe making this event the premier English Toy Spaniel event of the year. Mega-thanks to all those who helped to put on this event, all those who attended, and to all the Winners!

    Membership Recognition Programs
As many of you may recall from my platform statements during the recent election, I called for increasing the number of recognition programs available to the membership. As such, at the Q3 Board Meeting, a new business item for several new awards will be proposed. These awards include both Member-based and Dog-based awards and will include proposals for Life Member, Junior Member of the Year, Top males, Top females, Top Sire, Top Dam, English Toy Spaniel of the Year, Puppy of the Year, and Performance Dog of the Year. After review, discussion and approval, I look forward to rolling out the details of these new awards to the membership!

    Framework for Committee Structure
Also during the 2017 elections for the ETSCA, I presented a proposed committee framework that would enable more of the membership to actively participate in ETSCA activities and help to empower more of the membership to set direction for the club. The Board will again review this framework at the Q3 Board Meeting. The ETSCA is an organization that is over 125 years old. However, it still is a “work-in- progress” and can benefit from the skills and talents of it’s members to improve. My goal is to have this framework completed and unveiled to the membership in Q4 and to start seeking volunteers to fill out the enhanced framework of committees.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at etscapresident@gmail.com or any member of the Board with your questions, comments or suggestions,

    Until next time,
    Bruce Van Deman
